The FDA has been making changes in the hopes of reducing the salt in food we eat every day. The fact is that the average American is eating far too much salt every day and this excess of sodium is leading to some scary chronic health problems. Part of this effort from the FDA has been to reach out to the food industry and ask for voluntary assistance in cutting back on salt in food.
It has recently issued new guidelines that include two year goals and ten year goals. The hope is to be able to drop the sodium content found in hundreds of different types of prepared and processed foods. In that way, this could potentially reduce the average American’s risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.
In a statement from the FDA, the Health and Human Services Secretary, Sylvia Burwell said that “Many Americans want to reduce sodium in their diets.” She also added that despite this good intention, “that’s hard to do when much of it is in everyday products we buy in stores and restaurants.”
She then went on to say that the new guidelines from the FDA for lowering the salt in food are meant to make it possible for those people to take control over their own nutrition. This way, people can make the choices they want to decide how much salt they will be consuming in their meals. This has the potential to lead to an improvement in their health, said Burwell.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director, Dr. Tom Frieden also spoke on the subject, expanding on the size of the health risk posed by excessive regular sodium consumption. He underscored the fact that heart attack and stroke are the leading cause of death in the United States. He pointed out that a top risk factor playing a role in over 1,000 daily deaths is high blood pressure.
As there is a direct relationship between high blood pressure and consuming high amounts of salt, the decision was made to slash back the sodium intake across the country.
